Grain-free vet food that livers will love

Veterinary Surgeon Dr. Linda Simon

“This is a nutritious hepatic food made with top quality ingredients, that is highly palatable (unlike many of the other hepatic diets on the market!). A low protein food with limited copper, that is high in zinc and enriched with probiotics, it is the ideal option for those with liver disease, and one I'll be recommending a lot going forward.“

HEPATIC DRY DOG FOOD

This recipe provides all the active ingredients and specifications of a prescription dog food, with the unique benefit of a high-quality, grain-free base. Because when your dog needs to move to a veterinary food, they should also keep getting the best nutrition they can.

If your poorly pooch needs support with their liver function, then this is the food for them. Our Hepatic vet-developed health food contains the best ingredients, that livers will love, and to get tails wagging again.

Mealtimes are the most exciting part of our doggo’s day (as well as playtime of course!) – and there’s no need to compromise on scrumptiousness with the exciting infusion of flavours from our Hepatic dog food.

Eggs and peas in the recipe are low, yet adequate in protein and are calorie dense too, reducing ammonia build up and neurological signs caused by ‘hepatic encephalopathy’. As we know how important both a healthy body AND mind is for our pets.

Succulent flavours come from added chicken fat and salmon oil, which will provide them with the much-needed energy they crave. While the nutrients in milk thistle plays a key part in improving liver function.

And last but not least, the recipe is high in zinc to help remove excess copper stores from the liver. This is vital, as copper in the liver can be really harmful - leading to hepatitis, eventual fibrosis, and sometimes even liver failure.

Grain-free (which most vet-prescribed dog food isn’t), packed with goodness for a healthier liver, and delectably delicious? Your pooch will love you!

Please remember: This food should only be fed to dogs diagnosed with chronic liver disease - including pets with hepatitis, those whose livers have been damaged after toxin ingestion, and those who have a portosystemic shunt. Generally, this diet is offered alongside the appropriate prescribed medication.

What’s the best dog food for liver disease?

The liver is a hugely important organ that supports the body in many ways. When no longer able to carry out its functions adequately, your dog can suffer with a wide range of symptoms.

An unhealthy liver can struggle to break down regular dog food and this can contribute to toxin build up and a worsening of symptoms. Feeding a prescription diet will go a huge way towards reducing symptoms and supporting your dog’s ailing liver.

FAQs

Which dogs are good candidates for this diet?
Our hepatic food is designed for those with diagnosed liver disease including liver failure and dogs with portosystemic shunts.
Many dogs have grain intolerances, but owners struggle to find them a diet if they develop a medical issue and need a prescription dog food as many prescription diets contain grain. This grain free hepatic diet is the perfect solution for dogs with liver disease, who also happen to struggle with digesting grains. Grains do not form a natural part of the canine diet and as a result, many dogs struggle to digest grains. Intolerance to grains can manifest in many ways such as digestive discomfort, itchy skin and sub-optimal health.
When the liver is damaged, it struggles to process too much protein. This means it is important to steer clear of things like red meat and offal. Rather, sticking to non-animal protein sources such as peas and eggs, as this reduces the level of ammonia build-up to prevent neurological signs developing and is much better tolerated.
We appreciate that patients with liver disease often struggle with nausea and food aversions. That's why w've created this highly palatable diet, enriched with tasty fats, to create an irresistible meal.
