As gut health experts, we are HUGE fans of Kefir here at Pooch & Mutt.
Teeming with probiotics, including a surplus of beneficial Lactobacillus, Kefir is gut health gold dust for us humans, and for pooches too!
To really delve into the powers of Kefir, we teamed up with fellow gut health gurus over at Biotiful to analyse the impact a regular dose of Kefir can have on their gut health.
So, read on to explore what a Gut Health Test revealed for Kefir-loving Lennie the Italian Greyhound.
Lennie is a beautiful Italian Greyhound belonging to Becky, Senior Campaign & Content Manager over at Biotiful. As you’d assume, Lennie is a huge fan of Kefir, and it plays a key role in his everyday diet.

With all the good Kefir holds for gut health, we were interested to see just how much of an impact it’s had on Lennie’s gut health, especially when consumed every day as part of a healthy diet.
And here at Pooch, we of course had the perfect way to explore that - with a Pooch & Mutt Gut Health Test.
Becky took a sample of Lennie’s poop, sent it off to our lab and eagerly waited for their results.
A Pooch & Mutt Gut Health Test gave us an insight into the health of Lennie’s gut, the bacteria that live there and how equipped his gut is to support the rest of his body.

The ecosystem of bacteria found in your dog’s gut microbiome holds a myriad of important responsibilities. These responsibilities can range from supporting digestion and immunity to inflammation control, and all have a direct link to their overall health and wellbeing.
So when the microbial balance is even a little bit off, this can eventually manifest into unwanted symptoms and ailments for your dog - even if on the outside they seem perfectly healthy.
And this is why paying attention to your dog’s gut health is crucial for long-term health and happiness.
Just like other fermented foods, Kefir is considered a gut health superfood.
Kefir is crafted by fermenting milk with a unique blend of Kefir cultures.
When fermented for long enough, it makes a creamy, yoghurt consistency that you can have with granola, or your pooch can have spread onto a licky mat!
Due to its makeup and fermentation process, Kefir is naturally teeming with beneficial bacteria like Lactobacillus, which, when given on a daily basis, can help maintain and restore the microbial balance. And this is the key to great gut health.
And on that note, let’s see what a daily dose of Kefir has done for Lennie’s gut…
Lennie’s Gut Health Test Report gave us a lot of insight into his Invisible Health and what exactly is going on inside his gut. And taking into account his intake of gut-healthy Kefir, we got some truly interesting results!
Here are some of the key findings:
The first thing anyone will see on their dog’s Gut Health Test Report is their Invisible Health Score. This is a numerical score that accumulates everything - from what we know about your dog, like their breed and lifestyle, to the results of their Gut Health Test.
This score gives an insight into your dog’s health from the inside out, including aspects that you can’t see.
Lennie’s Invisible Health Score was Good at 62/100. This indicates that his gut is well-balanced and is well-equipped to support the rest of his body, health and wellbeing.
Lactobacillus is a beneficial bacterium that’s found within not only our dog’s gut, but our own, too!
Kefir is teeming with Lactobacillus, and this added probiotic can help restore microbial balance and help maintain great gut health.
Lactobacillus was found in Lennie’s gut, which was great to see and a clear reflection of Kefir’s impact.
But how can we link this to Kefir?
In our database of over 1,600 dogs, less than 30% had Lactobacillus present, and only 3% of those were in the optimal range. Meaning Lennie is in a small minority of dogs with a healthy level of Lactobacillus.

Lactobacillus rogosae is a beneficial species linked with good microbial balance. A balanced gut microbiome is a healthy one, and it means the gut is equipped to support a range of bodily functions, including digestion.
Most dogs don’t have detectable levels of Lactobacillus rogosae. The strong level seen in Lennie’s Gut Health Report is a standout finding and may reflect improved microbial resilience, overall health and immunity support.
Another category on your dog’s Gut Health Test Report is their Health Indicators. This is where we break down other bodily functions that need a balanced gut microbiome to perform efficiently, and make for optimum health and wellbeing.
These bodily functions include everything from digestion, immunity, joint health and inflammation control.
When it comes to Lennie’s results, it showed that his gut microbiome was efficiently supporting these other key bodily functions.

Specific standouts were his Immunological Function and Joints & Mobility, which both scored as Good.
This shows that Lennie’s gut microbiome is not only well equipped to support his immune system, meaning he’s able to sufficiently fight off infection, but that it also supports his joint and mobility health.
With Lennie having a sufficient amount of Lactobacillus present, this also reflects their anti-inflammatory properties that would help fight against joint issues and potentially other health conditions.
A healthy gut microbiome means the bacterial ecosystem is diverse, rich and varied. Meaning the bacteria present are of varying species but in equal proportion.
Lennie’s Gut Health Test Report found that he had 11 out of the 12 core bacteria present, and they made up 71% of the total microbiome.
This is a strong indicator of gut stability, which means Lennie’s gut has a lot of what it needs to bounce back after disruption (whether that’s from illness, eating something he shouldn’t or a course of antibiotics).
The function of a dog’s microbiome, their gut, and its impact on their overall health is reliant on its microbial balance. The balance of your dog’s gut microbiome is a delicate thing - easily knocked by a long list of factors, many of which are out of our control.
This means low Gut Health Test scores are quite common, and makes exploring your dog's gut health key for long-term health and wellbeing.

Conducting a Gut Health Test for your dog means you can fill in the gaps of what they need to feel their best. And with a tailored supplement plan created off the back of their results, it’s easy to pave the way towards great gut health.
Lennie’s Gut Health Test is a great example of what prioritising their gut health can do. Lennie’s daily dose of Lactoballicus-rich Kefir has helped contribute to maintaining great gut balance and resilience, as well as supporting those key functions that keep him healthy.
Kefir is just one part of what you can do to help get your dog’s gut back on track. The first step to gut health excellence for your dog starts with a Gut Health Test.
With your results, you can find out what supplements you need to do to unlock your dog’s full potential and help ensure one happy and healthy pooch.
