One of the first things you may ponder when you bring your new pup home is what they will be fed. The choice of dog food available on the market can be overwhelming and owners need to decide whether they wish to feed exclusively dry food, exclusively wet food or a mixed diet. Of course, this decision doesn’t have to be permanent and many find they may switch it up as their dog gets older and develops its own likes and dislikes.

Wet food usually contains about 80% moisture. It can be available in tins, cans or (as is done here at Pooch & Mutt) cartons that can be recycled. Wet food has many benefits when fed long term including:
- Improving general hydration and reducing the risk of cystitis and bladder stone formation.
- Fussy dogs tend to find wet food more palatable, meaning it can be easier to encourage these pernickety pooches to chow down.
- Wet foods often contain more protein-rich meat, which can be beneficial for those dogs that are very active and need plenty of protein to maintain their lean muscle mass.
- Softer foods can be easier for those with dental disease to manage. So, perhaps your dog is scheduled for a dental procedure or has just had one. Wet food is a good option to ensure they are still getting all of the calories and nutrients they need.
- Dogs with sensitive stomachs and those prone to constipation often do better on wet food diets made from all-natural ingredients. Opt for one enriched with prebiotics and/or probiotics when possible.

Many start off feeding dry food as it is perceived to be ‘easier’ by owners. This is likely as it can be stored for longer once open and makes less mess around the house. Benefits include:
- Improved dental hygiene. This is one of the main benefits of a dry food diet. The kibble doesn’t cake on teeth like wet food can, meaning there is less plaque build-up and gingivitis. This is especially important for those breeds prone to dental disease such as Greyhounds, Poodles and Chihuahuas.

There can be a misconception that young puppies cannot eat dry food. In fact, most handle it just fine. If you think your little one may be struggling with the crunchy kibble, you can moisten it with warm water for a few weeks. However, don’t do this long term as we are then negating the dental benefits.
In reality, the majority of pet parents end up feeding both wet and dry dog food. This may mean some kibble left down throughout the day and a wet meal in the evening, or perhaps offering a bowl that contains both. Many appreciate this compromise (owner and dog alike) and most do well on mixed diets.
Remember that we don’t have to choose either wet or dry and stick to it. Your dog’s preference may change as they mature, so keep an open mind. When transitioning diets, ensure to do so slowly over 5-10 days to the change is well tolerated.
